WAUKE PROJECT 水
紙は繊維をばらばらにしシート状に再構成されたものといわれます。 また日本の手漉き和紙は水芸ともいわれ、水の自然の動きと漉き手のコントロールされた動きの中で繊維は水の中に泳ぎ、絡み、強靭なシートになります。 また、和紙は自然の植物繊維をできるだけ丁寧に取り出し、自然の水を使い、作ることが理想とされています。 なぜならば、素材である植物や水は紙が作られる土地そのものであり、そこで作られる紙はその土地の人や環境を反映しているものと考えられているからだと思います。 現在この土地には、かつてポリネシアの方たちが海を越え運んできた、カヌープランツのひとつ、タパに使われるWAUKEが多くあります。これは日本の和紙に使われる楮の原種と同じで日本では梶と呼ばれ、楮同様、和紙の主要な原料のひとつです。また補助原料（ネリ）に使うことができるハイビスカスの仲間も自生しています。ただ、もうひとつの重要な要素水。一見このハワイの溶岩でできた、水はけのよい地表には水はあまりないようにみえます。。 しかし、今の雨季の季節。空からは多くの雨水が降り注ぎ、浸透しやすい溶岩を経て地下から海には豊かな水がありそうです。 これは地域の人々と外から訪れた日本人和紙職人でありアーティストが協働し自然の水を探し、その場の環境、景観をいかして、ハワイにポリネシアの方たちが運んできた重要なカヌープラントであり日本の和紙の原料でもある楮の原種に近いハワイのWAUKEを使いそれぞれの環境を漉きとり、シートにするプロジェクトです。
Paper is a object of reconstructed fibers in the form of a sheet.
Japanese hand-made Washi requires precise control over the movement of hand and water for the fibers to swim. They become entangled with each other and become a strong sheet. Because of this, it is called one of water’s tricks.
Moreover, the best condition for making Washi involves using only natural and local plant fibers and water. What you make the paper with (materials), and where you make it (the place) can be a reflection of the environment and people’s lives.
Today, there are lots of WAUKE in Hawaii. It is one of the canoe plants used for Tapa brought by Polynesian people a long time ago. WAUKE is called Kaji in Japan; it is from the same family as the Kouzo plant. These two plants (Kaji and Kouzo) are usually the main materials of Washi-making in Japan. There is also a type of Hibiscus growing here that can be used as support material (glue). In Hawaii the ground seems to absorb a lot of water because of the original lava. However, I think there might be a rich water source underground that connects to the ocean in the rain season.
This project is a collaboration between a Japanese Artist/Washi craftsman and the local people to create paper using WAUKE in the hopes of reflecting the environment, people, and natural materials from the place.
